Keep the stars shining bright


The skills needed for exceptional individual contributors and successful leaders are different. Promoting individual stars without consideration for their leadership skillset is bad for them and their teams. Create rewarding paths that don't lead solely to management. Train potential leaders before promoting them and assess whether management is the right fit rather than the "next" step.
